A desktop pet for Mac that reacts to your Mac
Desktop pets are an old idea. Little characters that walk along your windows have been around since the early days of Windows, and the Japanese Shimeji made them famous with fans drawing their own characters. Search for a desktop pet for Mac today and you'll find plenty that do the same thing: they walk, they climb, they sit on your windows.
That's cute for a day. Then you stop noticing them. A pet that does the same thing whatever you're doing is a screensaver with legs.
The pets people keep for months have one thing in common: they notice your Mac. Here's what that means, what to look for, and how we built it into Munchy Mates.
What "reacts to your Mac" means
Your Mac already knows a lot about your day. It knows how much battery is left, whether the charger is in, what time it is, whether you're on a call or in Focus, and which file you just dragged. A pet that reads those things can respond to your day, which is what makes it feel alive.
Your battery
In Munchy Mates, your battery is the pet's lunchbox. At 20% she gets hungry. At 10% she's in tears. At 5% she faints. Plug the charger in and she munches back to life, and once you're at 95% or more while charging, she's full. It sounds silly, and it is, but it's also the only low-battery warning that people actually look at.
The time of day
She's bright in the morning, lazy after lunch and yawning at night. From 1 to 8 am she's asleep, with the odd dream bubble. When you open your Mac after 8, she wakes up with a new greeting.
What you do
Hover over her and a couple of hearts float up. Drag a file to her mouth and she eats it. It goes to your Trash, so you can put it back. Click with two fingers and five PDF tools circle her: Merge PDFs, Split PDF, Compress PDF, PDF to Images and Images to PDF. Your original files are never changed.
What to look for in a Mac desktop pet
Whichever app you pick, these are the things that decide whether you'll keep it:
- It knows when to be quiet. A pet that chats during a video call gets deleted the same day. Munchy Mates goes quiet during calls, in Focus and when your Mac is muted, and you choose how chatty it is: about 6, 3 or 0 bubbles an hour.
- It's made for your Mac. Check that it runs on your Mac and your macOS version before you pay. Munchy Mates is a native Mac app for Apple silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
- It asks for nothing it doesn't need. No account, no camera. Munchy Mates goes online only to activate your license and check it now and then; everything else works offline.
- It stays out of the way. It should live in one place, not across your work. Munchy Mates sits above your Dock and has a paw icon in the menu bar instead of a Dock icon.
- It feels like yours. You should name your pet. In Munchy Mates you pick a cat, a pup or a bunny, give them a name, and they get a personality of their own.
Why we built it this way
Munchy Mates is made by one indie developer. The idea started with a simple question: what if the battery warning you always ignore was someone you didn't want to let down? Everything else, from sleep at night to eating your old files, came from asking the same question about the rest of the Mac.
Munchy Mates is $5 for the first 100 users. There's a live demo on the site you can play with first.
